The feature documentary The Tall Man, produced by Darren Dale and written and directed by Tony Krawitz, has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival which runs from 8-18 September 2011.

Based on the award-winning book by Chloe Hooper, The Tall Man, which received investment from Screen Queensland, tells the story of Cameron Doomadgee’s death in custody on Palm Island.

“I’m immensely proud that the film raises the profile in some small way of the struggle for justice faced by Indigenous Australians in 2011, and it’s terrific that this important story of Australia’s race relations will be showcased to an international audience,” said producer Darren Dale.

The Tall Man received investment from Screen Queensland for $50,000.

It has been nominated for Best Feature Length Documentary in the inaugural Samsung AACTA Awards (a continuum of the Australian Film Institute Awards, which have been awarding screen excellence in Australia since 1958), and for best Documentary: Public Broadcast among the 2011 AWGIE Award nominations.

The Tall Man will screen in the Real to Reel program at the Toronto Film Festival, marking the film’s international premiere. The Real to Reel program explores theatrical documentaries with hot topics that affect us all or provide intimate access into dramatic lives.

Australian audiences can view The Tall Man when the general public as well as AACTA/AFI members alike will be invited to view nominated Non Feature Films, as well as the 23 Feature Films in Competition, on the big screen at the Samsung AFI AACTA Festival of Film, to be held in Sydney and Melbourne from 6 October until 14 November.
