Three projects from Wild Fury which received Screen Queensland assistance are airing on ABC1 this month. The projects, Machete Maidens Unleashed!, Constructive Mob and The Trouble with St Mary’s, represent the diversity of this Queensland production company. Machete Maidens Unleashed!, which aired Thursday 12 May 2011 at 9:30pm, is a fast-moving, no-holds-barred exploration of the blood-drenched and action-packed world of Filipino genre filmmaking. Boasting cheap labour, exotic scenery and non-existent health and safety regulations, the Philippines was a dreamland for exploitation filmmakers whose renegade productions were soon engulfing drive-in screens around the globe like a tidal schlock-wave! Directed by Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood), this is the ultimate insiders' account of a faraway backlot where stunt men came cheap, plot was obsolete and the make-up guy was packin’ heat! Machete Maidens Unleashed! features interviews with cult movie icons Roger Corman, Joe Dante, John Landis, Sid Haig, Eddie Romero and a large assembly of cast, crew and critics, each with a jaw-dropping story to tell about filmmaking with no budget, no scruples, no boundaries and - more often than not - no clothes. To celebrate the screening, two Filipino genre films are also be available on ABC’s iView. Constructive Mob is a touching, sometimes humorous and ultimately inspiring journey into the lives of Indigenous road workers as they battle to overcome personal struggles and long term unemployment. A group of Indigenous trainees are about to take part in one of the most impressive roadwork construction efforts in Australian history, but first they will have to overcome their personal struggles - not only to complete their construction certificate but to achieve long-term employment; a hurdle they have faced all their lives. Now, these participants are taking part in a unique training program that aims to take long term unemployed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders into ongoing secure work. Through observational footage and intimate interviews the film will follow the trainees’ journeys from recruitment to graduation. Looking at these courageous people attempting to overcome immense personal burdens, Constructive Mob is a film about succeeding despite the odds. Constructive Mob airs on Message Stick on Wednesday 25 May 2011 at 6.30pm, and again on Sunday 19 June 2011 at 1.30pm. Airing on Compass, Monday 29 May 2011 at 10pm is The Trouble With St Mary’s. In February 2009, St Mary’s church in Brisbane is at the centre of one of the biggest rifts in the history of the Australian Catholic Church. 72 year old Parish Priest Father Peter Kennedy is sacked by the Catholic Church for unorthodox practices. The fight that ensues will result in the exodus of an entire Catholic community as they follow their priest into the unknown. The Trouble With St Mary's was directed by Peter Hegadus and co-produced with his company Soul Vision Films. Wild Fury Pty Ltd is one of Australia’s newest factual production companies. Wild Fury represents the combined forces of respected producers, Tina Dalton of Absolutely Wild Visuals and Content Mint and Veronica Fury of Fury Productions, with former Nine Network and Southern Star CEO Hugh Marks as executive director. Wild Fury is a diversified factual and factual entertainment production company with an integrated footage licensing business. Wild Fury is currently expanding to produce a broad range of high quality screen content for national and international broadcasters. |
