I'm a writer, how do I find a producer for my project?

Finding a producer requires quite a bit of research. As a writer, you want to target producers you believe will both connect with and be a champion for your material. There is no definitive path but the Encore Directory is a fantastic resource for the film and television industry (http://www.encoredirectory.com.au/).

Can Screen Queensland option my screenplay?

Screen Queensland does not option work.

How does Screen Queensland classify Early Stage?

Early Stage development differs slightly across features, documentary and television.

For feature films, early stage development can involve drafts of the script, working with a script editor, workshops, travel, etc. For features, it is preferable, but not essential to have a producer attached at this stage of development.

For television, a development deal from a broadcaster should be in place and Screen Queensland will consider applications for matching that investment. Screen Queensland will follow the lead of the broadcaster in terms of delivery requirements for early stage development. This could entail drafts of certain episodes, series outline, character breakdowns, or, in some cases, a sizzle reel.

For factual or documentary projects, market interest in the form of a letter of intent from a broadcaster is necessary to inform the direction of development and what is required from early stage development, whether that be a treatment, shooting script, travel, budget, marketing plan, etc.

Early stage aims for the project to reach a stage whereby significant market interest can be attached, and the producer can move into late stage development and secure financing for the project.

How does Screen Queensland classify Late Stage?

Late Stage aims to drive the project to a market ready stage, implementing everything that is necessary to commence pre-production on a project. A producer must be attached across all forms.

What is the process after an application for Project and Business Development is submitted?

Once an application is received, the applicant will receive a notice of receipt via email with an application reference number.

All contracts relating to the project need to be in place and approved. Following approval of the legal documents an in-depth assessment of the project commences and the Screen Queensland Project Manager will contact the applicant to discuss the application.

Should the Project Manager recommend your project for investment, he will write a formal document that outlines the project details, budget, and why the project is being recommended for funding.  This will be reviewed by the Head of Development & Production.

If the Head of Development & Production agrees with the recommendation, the applicant will receive a formal letter by e-mail, advising that the application has been successful.

Shortly after this, the applicant will receive a contract which outlines the terms and conditions of the investment.

Under no circumstance can a member of Screen Queensland verbally approve a project until the above process has been completed.

We want to shoot a television pilot, what funding is available through Screen Queensland?

Screen Queensland does not support the production costs incurred from shooting a pilot.

Where a development deal with a broadcaster is in place, and the delivery of a pilot episode or sizzle reel is a requirement, Screen Queensland will consider matching the investment.
