Marketing Reports
MIPTV (WD Entertainment Group) | Print |
Wednesday, 22 May 2013

Wes Dening of WD Entertainment Group attended MIPTV, in Cannes, France in April 2013

This market was a fantastic opportunity to promote WDE programs and also Queensland production. With fantastic tape (absolutely critical) in the factual entertainment space it was a chance to showcase the scripted and non-scripted work that WDE is producing and showcasing Queensland production talent.

Being our third time at the market, it proves that regular attendance is critical in gaining trust and also a strong business association with networks and distributors. This is evident through having meetings with higher level executives and being able to discuss (frankly) programming needs and programming that simply doesn't work for their market.  It is also a chance to follow up on programming needs that the networks expressed in previous markets.

We were fortunate to host an international launch for The Flying Winemaker. And we had a lot of press driven around the launch of the series – which we sold to Discovery Channel Asia Pacific. We announced this at the market. This means the The Flying Winemaker series, being produced in Queensland, will broadcast into 166-million households across Asia, Australia and New Zealand on the Discovery Channel.

Press for the series included: free MIPTV listings provided by the trade publications The Business of Film and Screen Australia. ABC Commercial (our distributor) supplied details on how buyers can make contact with us as well as programming information. We also secured through ABC Commercial a full page profile/interview in TV Asia Plus March 2013 issue, mention in ABC Commercial article in Worldscreen TV Asia Pacific MIPTV Edition, ention and image in MIPTV Preview Magazine Product News section, and article in MIPTV NEWS Day 3 with image, a news story in C21 NEWSFEED 9 April 2013, synopsis and image in pre-MIPTV Inside TV feature on ABC Commercial MIPTV slate, mention in C21 post MIP-TV interview with Natalie Lawley 26 April 2013 and mention in post-MIPTV Worldscreen Distributor spotlight in Worldscreen Weekly 26 April 2013.

This was critical in building awareness and interest in the series. Worldscreen also did an interview with Eddie and myself talking about the show which went global: http://www.worldscreen.com/articles/display/2013-5-15-real-flying-winemaker-wes-dening-eddie-mcdougall\

Just as critical to the face-to-face meetings is the follow up on each of the meetings, especially for the shows in early development. WDE's programs did resonate with buyers from all around the world and similar to The Stafford Brothers series 1 & 2 will shall continue to develop programming that is made in Queensland with storylines and narrative relatable globally.

Australian International Documentary Conference (Flickchicks) | Print |
Wednesday, 03 April 2013

Margie Brown from Flickchicks attended AIDC, in Adelaide, 25 - 28 February 2013

This was the fourth year we've been to AIDC and it's probably the most successful one for us yet.

It was an intense four days of pitching and networking (we've only JUST recovered!), which has proved to be most productive in progressing and developing our extensive slate of doco projects.

Getting in the ear of the commissioning editors, and meeting them face-to-face is critical for building relationships and quickly determining what they're looking for. You could spend considerable time writing an outline/ synopsis for a proposed story, only to discover that they've already commissioned a similar concept. This way, you can quickly run ideas by them to gauge whether you're onto something good.

The broadcaster sessions and keynote address were, as always, cram-packed with current and future market trends and also excellent for putting a face to a name (as there are always new people to stalk!).

AIDC is a must on the calendar for any documentary maker, irrespective of what stage they're at in their career - we couldn't contemplate NOT going on the annual pilgrimage, it is THAT valuable.

For those of you who haven't been before, here's some hot tips:

• arrange as many meetings as you can WELL before you head down,

• never go down ill-prepared or without a structured game plan

• definitely put a teaser into Trailer Park (it's where we successfully pitched our first commission with the ABC)

• do your research on the people (and their organisation) you're meeting up with – know what they look like and what they've commissioned in the past, and

• don't bail anyone up in the loo or on the dance floor!.

Australian International Documentary Conference (Sarah Scragg Productions) | Print |
Monday, 04 March 2013

Sarah Scragg of Sarah Scragg Productions attended AIDC, in Adelaide, 24 February - 1 March 2013

This was my first AIDC conference in a very long time and I am very glad I went.  Being fairly removed from the day to day industry as I live in Far North Queensland, the conference provides a fantastic opportunity to mingle with those in my field as well as to meet face to face the commissioning editors and distributors in a relaxed environment.  My project was selected as one of 20 for the Meet Market and this meant that many of my meetings were organised for me.  If you have a project you are working on I would definitely recommend applying for the Meet Market component of the conference.  Meetings are for 15 minutes but if you are ready and organised you can gain a lot from those few minutes.

There were numerous sessions on anything from market trends to new ways of distributing media in this rapidly changing time, and alternate financing options.  Most of the broadcasters held 'snapshot' sessions which gave you an opportunity to sit in a small group and have more of a discussion about their needs and slots.

I was looking forward to the screenings during the last three days of the conference where the films are also open to the public but due to work constraints I had to fly home.  I think to round off a great week, staying on and viewing these films and pondering on what you have heard throughout the conference would be a nice way to finish the time there.

European Film Market (Angela Walsh Productions Pty Ltd) | Print |
Tuesday, 26 February 2013

Angela Walsh of Angela Walsh Productions Pty Ltd attended  EFM, in Berlin, Germany pm 7 - 19 February 2013

There seemed to be less people attending the EFM this year but even so it was a good market for me. My official meeting list was not long but it was significant and the outcomes were extremely positive. It is clear that my "darker" projects (contemporary Sci Fi and Supernatural) are of great interest Internationally. However, my main priority right now is the comedy feature so I'm glad that the sales agent is now formally attached.

IDFA (Antidote Films) | Print |
Tuesday, 08 January 2013

Ruari Elkington of Antidote Films, attended IDFA (International Documentary Festival Amsterdam) from 14 - 25 November 2012

I'm here for documentary - feature documentary no less. As IDFA celebrates 25 years of bullishly championing them to the world, the mood here is truly festive. If feature docs are facing a slow decline in funding and support in some parts of our media-sphere IDFA didn't get that memo.

Many, many people are getting frothy over factual here and it's a beautiful thing. IDFA is a festival with feet firmly planted in the business of selling and celebrating long-form and as an acquisitions guy slogging away in the trenches of bringing these films to our shores the unabashed enthusiasm on display is intoxicating.

SPAA 2012 (NickNackTV) | Print |
Wednesday, 02 January 2013

Nick Hopkin of NickNackTV attended SPAA 2012 in Melbourne, in November 2012

SPAA 2012 was a wonderful opportunity of meeting some old faces as well as some new and inspiring personalities from both the Australian Film & TV market as well as some influential overseas visitors and local / international broadcasters. It’s an incredibly important market for Australian producers to meet and collaborate and share current trends and useful contacts. The open sharing of ideas is always a benefit and where synergies can benefit two companies forging alliances to take on the “big guns” of the international market, then I’m all for it.

The market is pretty well organised with the exception of a slightly awkward venue in Docklands (Melbourne) which was not totally suited for taking meetings. But the organisers this year should be applauded for some highly interesting sessions, a great cast list for one on one chats, a fantastic studio visit for delegates and some great locations for evening networking and awards.

This was the first SPAA that I have attended as a freelance producer and developer of ideas and I went with an open mind and what I thought was an impressive collection of formats and marketing materials. Of course you should never expect to secure that all important “commission” in one swoop as everyone plays their cards close to their chests. However I was able to take some useful meetings and it was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas and get a wider understanding of what the “buyers” (Both broadcasters and larger independents) may be after this year.
My advice is ALWAYS follow up with your contacts as soon as you return back to HQ. Keep that pot boiling!!!

SPAA 2012 (Wild Fury) | Print |
Monday, 10 December 2012

Veronica Fury of Wild Fury attended SPAA 2012 in Melbourne, from 12 - 15 November 2012

SPAA is a very important market for Australian producers. It connects producers with key Australian and International players. Not only does it provide vital opportunities to pitch to broadcasters and distributors, but I could also meet with funding bodies, production companies and facility providers.

While my focus was on pitching, I also met with broadcasters (ABC and SBS), distributors (naked Flame) and producers (Bear Cage and Prospero) and to see what projects are currently in production.

SPAA is great lead in to WCSFP and AIDC. From my meetings I was able to take on feedback and prepare for WCSFP. Especially with regards to trends in dramatisation and talent driven programming.

American Film Market (Silver Wings Films Pty Ltd) | Print |
Monday, 03 December 2012

Pam Collis of Silver Wings Films Pty Ltd attended AFM, Los Angeles, USA from 29 October to 9 November 2012

This was my fourth film market, after attending Cannes in May earlier this year and AFM in LA Nov 2011, and was also my third film market as an independent Producer. I was able to follow up on the contacts made at previous markets as well as focusing on meeting International producers who were looking for Aust Producers to partner with.

I focused on meeting various international funding businesses so as to understand the other side of potential co-pro projects. This was done in the hope of short circuiting the long drawn out assessment periods that can sometimes hamper progress on a project.

I met a number of potential Canadian and Chinese Producing Partners who were keen to discuss and offer projects that could access the Australian Producer offset.
